ACCESSIBILITY
Our Commitment to Inclusion — In Every Space, On Every Screen
"Accessibility is not an afterthought at Solo Expression — it is the foundation of everything we do. Our mission is to evolve disabilities through dance, and that mission extends from the studio floor to every screen that displays our website."
Solo Expression LLC ("Solo Expression," "we," "us," or "our") was founded on the principle that dance is for everyone — regardless of ability, age, or background. As an organization that specializes in dance therapy and adaptive movement programming for individuals with developmental disabilities, at-risk youth, seniors, and physically impaired populations, we hold ourselves to the highest standard of accessibility in both our physical spaces and our digital presence.
1. OUR ACCESSIBILITY PHILOSOPHY
Solo Expression was created by Anthony "Solo" Harris to provide a dance environment that merges traditional studio standards with a dedicated focus on supporting individuals who are too often excluded from the arts. Accessibility is not a compliance exercise for us — it is the reason we exist.
PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY
Our studio and on-site programming are designed to accommodate wheelchair users, individuals with mobility aids, and participants with varying physical capabilities.
SENSORY ACCESSIBILITY
We adapt instruction for individuals with visual or hearing impairments, using tactile cues, visual demonstrations, and modified communication strategies.
COGNITIVE ACCESSIBILITY
Our adaptive dance methodology uses simplified instruction, repetition, visual schedules, and positive reinforcement tailored to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY
Our website is built to meet recognized accessibility standards so that individuals who use assistive technologies can access information about our programs and services.
2. DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS
Solo Expression is committed to ensuring that our website conforms to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines help make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.
What We Do
Our ongoing accessibility efforts include:
- Using semantic HTML structure with proper heading hierarchy (H1 through H6) so screen readers can navigate content logically.
- Providing descriptive alternative text for all meaningful images, including photographs of our programs, products, and participants.
- Ensuring sufficient color contrast between text and background elements throughout the site.
- Making all interactive elements (navigation, forms, buttons, links) fully keyboard-accessible and operable without a mouse.
- Using ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) labels and roles where native HTML elements alone do not convey meaning to assistive technologies.
- Designing responsive layouts that function properly on screen readers, screen magnifiers, and alternative input devices.
- Ensuring that our Zoom class booking system, online store, and donation platform maintain accessibility across the enrollment and checkout process.
- Avoiding content that flashes more than three times per second, which could trigger seizures in individuals with photosensitive conditions.
Third-Party Content
Our website integrates with third-party services including our booking platform, donation provider (Zeffy), and payment processor. While we select partners that share our commitment to accessibility, we cannot guarantee that all third-party content meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. If you encounter an accessibility barrier on a third-party page accessed through our site, please contact us and we will work to find an alternative way to provide the information or service you need.
3. COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE LAWS
Solo Expression is committed to compliance with applicable accessibility laws and regulations, including:
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
As a place of public accommodation under Title III of the ADA, Solo Expression ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to our programs, services, and facilities. This obligation extends to both our physical studio space and the digital services we offer through our website. We take a proactive approach to identifying and removing barriers to access.
ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Rule (2024)
While the Department of Justice's April 2024 final rule updating Title II of the ADA — which formally adopted WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the technical standard for web accessibility — applies directly to state and local government entities, Solo Expression voluntarily aligns with this standard. As an organization that serves populations with disabilities and partners with public agencies for waiver-funded services, meeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA is both a legal best practice and a reflection of our values.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Solo Expression programs that receive federal financial assistance or partner with organizations that do are subject to Section 504, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. We ensure that our programming remains accessible to all qualified individuals.
Pennsylvania Human Relations Act
As a Pennsylvania-based organization, Solo Expression complies with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, which prohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation on the basis of disability, among other protected characteristics.
Solo Expression goes beyond minimum compliance. As an organization whose core mission is serving individuals with disabilities, we view accessibility standards as a starting point — not a ceiling. Our founder's 10+ years of direct care experience with developmentally disabled individuals, at-risk youth, and physically impaired populations informs every decision we make about how our programs and platforms serve our community.
4. PHYSICAL FACILITY ACCESSIBILITY
Our studio and partner locations are evaluated for physical accessibility, including:
- Wheelchair-accessible entrances and restrooms at our primary studio location.
- Open floor plans that accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices during dance instruction.
- Coordination with partner facilities (schools, care centers, community organizations) to ensure accessible venue selection for on-site programming.
- Availability of Zoom classes as an alternative for individuals who cannot physically access in-person sessions due to mobility, transportation, or geographic barriers.
5. ACCESSIBLE PROGRAMMING
Accessibility in our dance programming is designed into the curriculum, not added as a modification. Anthony "Solo" Harris developed a proprietary form of dance therapy specifically engineered for participants with a wide range of abilities. Key features include:
- Adaptive choreography that can be performed seated, standing, or with mobility aids.
- Multi-sensory instruction combining visual demonstration, verbal cues, and tactile guidance.
- Small class ratios for specialized sessions to ensure individual attention and safety.
- Progressive difficulty that meets participants at their current ability level and builds from there.
- Integration of positive affirmations and self-expression to support emotional well-being alongside physical movement.
- Staff trained in de-escalation, behavioral support, and trauma-informed approaches.
6. FEEDBACK AND BARRIER REPORTING
We welcome feedback on the accessibility of our website, programs, and facilities. If you experience a barrier to access — whether digital, physical, or programmatic — please let us know so we can address it promptly.
When reporting an accessibility issue, it helps us to know:
- The web page URL or program where you encountered the barrier.
- A description of the issue and the assistive technology you were using (if applicable).
- Your preferred method of contact so we can follow up.
We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within 5 business days and to resolve identified issues as quickly as possible.
7. ONGOING IMPROVEMENT
Accessibility is an ongoing commitment. Solo Expression regularly reviews its website, programs, and facilities to identify and address accessibility gaps. This includes periodic audits of our website against WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria, incorporating accessibility feedback from participants and their families, and staying informed about evolving standards and best practices in both digital accessibility and adaptive arts programming.
